What Hollywood gets WRONG about Arabs, The Middle East, and Arabic

I had no intention of making a video about this topic until 20 minutes before I started filming...

No really. I’m serious. There I was, in front of the mirror finishing up my makeup, thinking “today I’ll film my Q&A about relationships” — backstory: there’s a list of 12 questions that I had written for future guests about their thoughts on various aspects of dating/relationships…I was going to answer them for you this week, so you’d know my thoughts before I ask others about theirs. That was the plan…then I got sidetracked by something, and though I genuinely do not remember what ‘something’ was, I’m super happy that I did this video. I feel like it’s the culmination of many things that I’ve noticed for a while but not talked about to anyone outside of my semi-inner circle. So…here goes! Hope you enjoy it.

Here are some timestamps to help you navigate:

0:42 – Typecasting the “Arab look”

02:06 – Stereotypes about arabs

3:00 – “Arab” skin tone

06:29 – Arabic dialects

07:55 – Hollywood’s “Arab”

08:40 – Stereotypes I faced

09:34 – Bonus story: the screenwriter

Shannon
